(Thanks to Shaquita Wilson-Hooker for capturing this iconic photo of BHS senior Jeremy Bibbs celebrating after the game. Yes, Jaguars is misspelled on the scoreboard. It wasn’t user error, but rather an old scoreboard that didn’t want to cooperate. If you’d like to contribute to a new scoreboard, reach out to BHS Athletic Director Mandy Vinson.)
Every Thursday, Cliff Furr is Talking Ball, Y’all with a new weekly column that’s presented by our partners at Toyota of Brookhaven.

The vibes were high last Friday night in Brookhaven, Mississippi.
I wasn’t at King Field to see the finish of Brookhaven High against Madison Central, but I could feel the good vibes emitting through the speakers in my car.
It was parked at the bottom of the big hill behind the west end zone at Parklane Academy
I sat there and flipped between two games on the radio, Brookhaven Academy at Bowling Green School and BHS hosting MC.
I’d just got done watching Parklane Academy take down Oak Forest Academy. After walking back to my vehicle, I spent a couple minutes sitting there, updating final scores on Facebook for Y’all Sports.
I tried to pull away and had it in drive before realizing the endings about to go down for BA and BHS warranted me parking and listening.
I tuned in just in time to hear the call by Ken Hollingsworth of Jacob Jone’s game winning field goal that sailed through the uprights in Franklinton, Louisiana with seven seconds left for BA.
The 17-16 win for the Cougars set off a loud celebration amongst the visiting fans that you could clearly pick up on the field mic used by Hollingsworth.
BA got a touchdown pass from quarterback Will Newell to wideout Wilson Calcote and a scoring run from running back Walt Smith prior to the kick by Jones that made the Cougars 2-1 on the season.
I’ve been to games like that when I was a student, long road trips that feel so much quicker on the return, as everyone is feeling good following a rousing win.
I expected the same type of feeling was emitting from Loyd Star fans at that same time, as the Hornets had been in Eatonville, outside of Hattiesburg, playing North Forrest High on Friday.
In what’s become typical of Loyd Star football of late, the Hornets took the win with a physical effort in a game that had been tight early but ended in a 22-12 victory for LS that moved them to 3-0.
As the BA game went final, I listened to the ending of the Brookhaven High game with Mark Lewis on the call.
There wasn’t one second where that game hadn’t been tight.
The Panthers and Jaguars were scoreless at halftime before BHS pulled ahead 14-7. An absolute bomb of a touchdown pass tied things up late and overtime started with the score knotted at 14-14.
MC kicked a field goal on its opening possession.
The first offensive play of overtime for BHS was the game winner. Junior quarterback Jaden Allen had the choice to hand off to senior running back Caiden Quarles or to keep it himself.
Allen read the defensive end pinching towards Quarles and masterfully rode the exchange until the last moment before pulling the ball back in. He then picked up a couple devastating blocks from his lineman and shot into the endzone.
On our Facebook page, we posted a video on Saturday from the Madison Central broadcast. The camera is trained towards the south end zone and when Allen crosses the goal line, you hear a tidal wave of noise coming from the home stands of King Field.
A roar is the best way I could describe it.
I got home before my kids did. They’d been in the student section at BHS, as my daughter Amelia is a junior there and my son Graham is an eighth grader in the district.
Graham roared himself when he walked through the door after going to the Boulevard for something eat with his sister after the game.
Covered in paint that he’d picked up prior to the game in Panther Park, G came through the door talking 90-miles an hour.
“Best game of my life,” he said. And though he is just 13 years old, that statement means a little more coming from him than the average kid. Graham has been to a ton of high school football games with me already in his life.
One time I looked up from the sideline at a Bogue Chitto game and he was acting as a waterboy for the Bobcats while I was taking pictures. I think he was probably seven years old.
The dude knows ball and he was jacked up on Bahja Blast and Brookhaven High football when he came in the door.
As Amelia and her friends came in to fill our living room, they kept talking about the moments and plays that stood out and about how the whole night had been like a movie.
The vibes were so high, I’m pretty sure no one in my house fell asleep before 1 a.m.
The next day around town and the following day at church, you couldn’t help but bring up how amazing the Friday Night Lights had been that weekend.
Somebody said, it feels like ’04.
We’ve got a long way to go between now and the MHSAA 5A State Championship.
Brookhaven High has a tough game on Friday at their ancient rivals from McComb High. They’ll then host another tough 7A program on Sept. 26 when Northwest Rankin comes to town.
I’m not going to put any expectations on this group of teenagers and their coaches, but I am going to say this, when you’ve got a championship level team in your town, everyone can feel it.
It makes you long for Friday Night Lights.
It makes you yearn for those good vibes that stir up memories of Jimmy and Bud and Bookie and the fellas bringing a state championship back to B-Town over 20 years ago.
It makes the week go by so much faster, until you get a chance to watch your favorite team play again and catch some more of those good Friday night vibes.

We had the star wars set. Always wanted the milineum falcon. That sears book had pages and pages ear marked…
